Google Asks: What is a Browser?

Jun 20th 2009 // by Steve // SEO Blog

The consensus seems to the same on the many blogs sharing a video produced by New York-based Google employees asking people What is a Browser?. According to the clip, filmed on the streets in Time Square, only 8 percent of the people surveyed knew the difference between a browser and a search engine.

Obviously the goal of this video was to hit those users who didn’t see (or ignored) the Download Chrome button that had fermented on the homepage of Google for several days this month and to improve adoption rate of the new Google browser.

According to TechCrunch, the video may have been produced to counter recent Microsoft campaigns:

Note the difference in culture, though. While Microsoft is trying to lure people away from using browsers like Firefox or Chrome with cold hard cash (or at least a chance to get some of that), Google employees don’t make a big fuss about letting people use the brand names of competitors in their videos and they humorously handle the fact that none of the people interviewed knew what Google Chrome is to begin with.

TheNexWeb.com says “The responses will shock you.” I for one was shocked and felt like even more of a geek than I had when I woke up this morning.

Obviously if you’re reading our blog, you know the difference between a search engine and a browser, but you might not know the difference between SEO and SEM. Hopefully you’ll find those answers within our other posts and SEO Videos.
